Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Lampent from the Steam Siege Pokemon Card set. Lampent is a stage 1, psychic type Pokemon card, with an HP of 80. It has a x2 weakness to darkness type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to fighting type Pokemon, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost. Lampent does not have an Ability but it does have two moves. The first move that this card has is called Mirror Mirror, for one colorless energy card, each player draws or discards until they have 4 cards in their hand. Lampent's second move is called Flickering Flames, for two energy cards, one each of colorless and psychic, this move does 20 damage and puts the defending Pokemon to sleep.
Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Lampent is a Stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Litwick into play (I reviewed Litwick from this set yesterday) and then evolve Litwick into Lampent. Lampent does have a Stage 2 evolution in Chandelure, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, that you'll probably want to use with this Pokemon line but since I haven't reviewed that card yet, the strategy below will act like Lampent is the final evolution in this line. So if you read my review of Litwick, you'll know that I thought it was a below average Basic Pokemon card, it really couldn't be used in a deck unless you had trainer cards or moves on cards that retrieved cards from the discard pile, if you did, Litwick would have been beneficial for the deck since it was able to discard two cards from your deck into your discard pile, thus allowing you to quickly get Pokemon you want into play. But, since that card didn't have a move, it wasn't highly recommended. So knowing this about Litwick and looking at this Lampent card, the first move this card has, Mirror Mirror, is similar to Litwick's move in that, it only works in certain situations, in this case, if you know you have lots of trainer cards to use or you know you won't have many cards in your hand, you can then draw the cards out of your deck, and have your opponent discard them, or if you want lots of cards in your discard pile, you could use Lampent's move when you have a full hand and discard several of the cards from your hand. Besides that move, Lampent's Flickering Flames move is solid overall, I wish it would do a little more damage a turn, but putting the defending Pokemon to sleep is useful. Overall, I can't recommend using either of the first two Pokemon in this line unless your deck will benefit from discarding Pokemon, if that is the case, use a 1-1 line of this Pokemon family.
Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating. In my opinion this is a below average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Steam Siege set. I think if this card would have had a HP of 90, I would have gave this card an average rating, but because it is below average and the first move that this card has isn't that useful, this card is below average at best. Together with Litwick from this set, which I gave a 2 rating, both cards get a 2 out of 5 rating.
