Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Mareep from the Steam Siege set. Mareep is a basic, lightning type Pokemon card with an HP of 60. It has a x2 weakness to fighting type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to metal type Pokemon, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost. Mareep does not have an Ability but it does have two moves. The first move that this card has is called Thunder Wave, for one colorless energy card this move paralyzes the defending Pokemon if you get a heads when flipping a coin. Mareep's second move is called Tackle and for two energy cards, one each of lightning and colorless, this move does 20 damage.
Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Mareep is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Flaaffy, and a Stage 2 evolution in Ampharos, which I'll be reviewing the next couple of days, you'll more than likely want to use some of those Pokemon with this card, however, since I have not reviewed any of those cards yet, I will just act like Mareep does not have any evolution forms and that it will be used on its own. On its own, this card could be used as a starter type Pokemon in a lightning type deck because it can attack for only one energy card, has a solid HP, and has a low retreat cost. Because Mareep can't do any damage for one energy card but just prevent your opponent from attacking, there are definitely better cards out there to use, but if you are using this card with the full line, this is an excellent start. Plus, you can put two energy cards on this card in the beginning of the game and do 20 damage a turn and then dedicate the rest of your energy cards to your benched Pokemon. While I would not use 4 of these in a deck on their own, this card merits at least a look at use in a deck.
Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating. In my opinion, this is an average Basic Pokemon card from the Steam Siege set. To me, there really aren't any negatives on this card, but really no great positives either, it is purely average overall. Like I said above, it has an average HP, low retreat cost, and two decent moves. So if you're building a lightning type deck or plan on using Ampharos in your deck, this card is a solid one.
