Quilava -- BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Review

Quilava BREAKthrough Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Quilava from the BREAKthrough Pokemon Card set.  Quilava is a stage 1, fire type Pokemon card, with an hp of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to water type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Quilava does not have an Ability or an Ancient Trait and it only has one move.  The only move that this card has is called Mini Eruption, this move requires two energy cards to use, one each of fire and colorless, and does 30 damage plus 30 more damage if the top card of your deck when discarding that card is an energy card.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Quiliva is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Cyndaquil into play (I reviewed Cyndaquil from this set yesterday) and then evolve Cyndaquil into Quilava.  Quilava does have a Stage 2 evolution in Typhlosion, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, that you'll probably want to use with this Pokemon line but since I haven't reviewed that card yet, the strategy below will act like Quilava is the final evolution in this line.  So if you read my review of Cyndaquil, you'll know that I thought that card was an average Basic Pokemon card, it had a solid HP, low retreat cost, and two moves that both did damage so I could definitely see the card being used on its own.  So knowing this about Cyndaquil and looking at this Quilava card, I would not recommend using these two cards together without using Typhlosion.  The main reason I say this is because Quilava has a low HP and a weak move for a Stage 1 card that can do above average damage but requires a lot to guarantee that it can do that amount.  So there is no reason to use this card in a deck without Typhlosion and this card is so poor, I would evolve the whole line on the bench instead of wanting to use Quilava in the active Pokemon spot.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 1 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is a very poor Stage 1 Pokemon card from the BREAKthrough set.  This card just doesn't appeal to me at all, it has a low HP and only one move that does below average damage for the amount of energy cards it requires and the fact that this card is a Stage 1 card.  So like I mentioned above, stay away from this card at all costs unless you have to use it to get Typhlosion into play.  Together with Cyndaquil from this set, I can only give these two cards a 1 out of 5 rating, there is just no reason to use this Quilava card.

Cyndaquil -- BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Review

Cyndaquil BREAKthrough Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Cyndaquil from the BREAKthrough set.  Cyndaquil is a basic, fire type Pokemon card with an HP of 60.  It has a x2 weakness to water type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Cyndaquil does not have an Ability or an Ancient Trait but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Tackle, for one colorless energy card this move does 10 damage.  Cyndaquil's second move is called Ember and for two energy cards, one each of colorless and fire, this move does 30 damage, however a fire energy card must be discarded from Cyndaquil after performing this move.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Cyndaquil is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Quilava, and a Stage 2 evolution in Typhlosion, which I'll be reviewing the next few days, you'll more than likely want to use some of those Pokemon with this card, however, since I have not reviewed any of those cards yet, I will just act like Cyndaquil does not have any evolution forms and that it will be used on its own.  On its own, this card could be used as a starter type Pokemon since this card can attack with only one energy card and it can do up to 30 damage a turn which should knock out some Basic Pokemon in two turns.  However, if you're building a fire type deck, I wouldn't go too crazy with this card just because Ember makes you discard an energy every time you attack, but you could always put a Burning Energy card on Cyndaquil to prevent this.  So if you're building a fire type deck and need a starter type Pokemon, I would definitely recommend considering this Cyndaquil card.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is an average Basic Pokemon card from the BREAKthrough set.  There is nothing that I really dislike about this card, it has an average HP, low retreat cost and two solid moves.  The only thing preventing me from really liking this card is that Ember discards an energy card, but like I stated above this can be prevented with a Special energy card.

Gogoat -- BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Review

Gogoat BREAKthrough Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Gogoat from the BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Set.  Gogoat is a stage 1, grass type Pokemon card, with an hp of 120.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost.  This Gogoat card does not have an Ancient Trait or an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Overrun, for one grass energy card this move does 10 damage plus 30 damage to one of your opponent's benched Pokemon.  Gogoat's second move is called Horn Leech, this move requires three grass energy cards to use and does 90 damage plus heals 30 damage from Gogoat.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Gogoat is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Skiddo into play (I reviewed Skiddo from this set yesterday) and then evolve Skiddo into Gogoat.  If you read yesterday's review of Skiddo, you'll know that I thought that card was a very solid Basic Pokemon card, it had an above average HP, and two, solid moves, the only downside on the card was that it required two energy cards to retreat instead of one.  So knowing this about Skiddo and looking at this Gogoat card, this card could definitely be used in a grass type deck, not as a card you feature a deck around but a strong supporting card since it can do both major damage and spread damage around.  I would definitely consider at least a 1-1 line of Skiddo and Gogoat in a deck and add more if the deck you're trying to build is spread attack.  Once Gogoat is in play, I would mainly use Horn Leech unless you have other Pokemon in play that benefit from Pokemon having damage on them.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 4 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an above average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the BREAKthrough set.  There really isn't anything that I dislike about this card.  It has a high HP, made even higher by Horn Leech, it can do major damage, plus it can spread damage around.  I would give the same rating to the entire line of Skiddo and Gogoat as I gave to just Gogoat today, a 4 out of 5 rating, this line is definitely worthy of use in grass type decks.

Skiddo -- BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Review

Skiddo BREAKthrough Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Skiddo from the BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Set.  Skiddo is a basic, grass type Pokemon card with an hp of 70.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost. Skiddo does not have an Ancient Trait or Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Razor Leaf, for one grass energy card this move does 10 damage.  Skiddo's second move is called Rising Lunge, for two energy cards, one each of grass and colorless, this move does 20 damage plus 20 more damage if you get a heads when flipping a coin.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Skiddo is a basic Pokemon card with a stage 1 evolution in Gogoat, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, you'll more than likely want to use this card with that Pokemon.  However, since I haven't reviewed that card yet, I'll just act as though I plan on using this card without its evolution.  So, on its own, this card could definitely be used as a starter type Pokemon in a deck since it has two moves and the first move only requires one energy card to attack.  This card is fairly limited in what it can do, since it can't do anything other than damage, but being able to do 40 damage for two energy cards is pretty good and a good start to the game.  The only downside on this card is that you can't retreat this card for one energy card, so if you plan on using this card for Razor Leaf, you'll have to add an additional energy card to retreat it.  I would consider using one or two of these cards in a grass type deck if you're in search of a starter type Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  So in my opinion, on its own, without considering Gogoat, this is an average Basic Pokemon card from the BREAKthrough set.  Like I said above, this card is solid overall, the only downside being its high retreat cost, but this card does have an above average HP and two solid not spectacular moves.  So this card could definitely work in decks being built, you just don't want to try and base your deck around this card.
