Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Axew from the BREAKthrough set. This is the first of two consecutive Axew cards I'll be reviewing from this set. Axew is a basic, dragon type Pokemon card with an HP of 60. It has a x2 weakness to fairy type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost. Axew does not have an Ability but it does have two moves. The first move that this card has is called Brat Snack and for one colorless energy card this move does 10 damage. Axew's second move is called Dragon Claw and for three energy cards, one each of fighting, metal, and colorless, this move does 40 damage.
Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Axew is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Fraxure, and a Stage 2 evolution in Haxorus, which I'll be reviewing the next few days, you'll more than likely want to use some of those Pokemon with this card, however, since I have not reviewed any of those cards yet, and I have not reviewed the second Axew card from this set yet, I plan on reviewing this card as if it would be used on its own and I have no knowledge of the second Axew card from this set. So on its own, this card could be used as a starter type Pokemon because it can attack for only one energy card, but other than the first turn, this card isn't that great because it can't do more than 10 damage unless you put three energy cards on it, three distinct energy cards, and then it can only do 40 damage which is well below average. So if you're building a deck that may benefit from using a Basic Pokemon like Axew, I would strongly consider going in a different direction, just because this card is limited in what it can do unless you plan on evolving it, then putting three energy cards on this card would seem more reasonable.
Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating. In my opinion, this is a slightly below average Basic Pokemon card from the BREAKthrough set. I like that this card has an average HP, and a move that can do damage for only one energy card. But because this card requires both metal and fighting type energy to attack, it is limited to the decks that it can be in, so unless you're specifically building a metal and fighting type deck, look elsewhere for a Basic Pokemon card to use.
