Vileplume -- Burning Shadows Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Vileplume from the Burning Shadows Pokemon Card Set.  Vileplume is a Stage 2, Grass type Pokemon card, with a HP of 140.  It has a x2 weakness to Fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a three Colorless Energy card retreat cost.  This card's Ability is called Disgusting Pollen, it says that as long as Vileplume is your Active Pokemon, your opponent's Basic Pokemon can't attack.  Besides the Ability, this card just has one move called Downer Shock, for three Energy cards, two Grass and one Colorless, this move does 60 damage.  Plus, when using this move, you may flip a coin, if you get a heads the defending Pokemon is Asleep, if you get a tails, the defending Pokemon is Confused.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Vileplume is a Stage 2 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Oddish into play and then evolve it into Gloom before you can evolve Gloom into Vileplume, both of those Pokemon are from this set and I've reviewed both of them the last two days.  If you've read my reviews of those cards you'll know that I gave each card a 2 out of 5 rating individually and a 1 out of 5 rating combined.  Both Pokemon had below average HP, with 50 and 80 respectively, and neither card could do much damage.  All Oddish could do was Poison the defending Pokemon, and Gloom could either Confuse the defending Pokemon or do a maximum of 30 damage when attacking.  Because both Pokemon are so poor together, and the only reason you'd want to include this line in a deck is to use Vileplume in the Active Pokemon spot, I would suggest setting up this line on your Bench.  This Vileplume card is an excellent card to both prevent your opponent from even putting powerful Basic Pokemon into their Active Pokemon spot, like GX and EX cards, and it can also make them unable to attack while Vileplume is in the Active Pokemon spot.  Although the move on Vileplume does require a fair amount of Energy cards to use, and only does average damage, I like the fact it also inflicts a Special Condition, considering you're only going to have this card in the Active Pokemon spot if the defending Pokemon is a Basic Pokemon, 60 damage should be very good each turn.  Because Oddish and Gloom in this set are so poor, I would only use a 1-1-1 line of this Pokemon family, setting up the line on the Bench, I would sure like to use more than 1 Vileplume in a deck to get to it faster, but there is no reason to bloat your deck with poor cards like Oddish and Gloom.  So, if you're looking for a good way to take down decks based around Basic EX and GX cards, definitely consider using this Vileplume family in a deck, just be prepared to use a Trainer to switch it out of the Active Pokemon spot, or give up three Energy cards each time it is retreated.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 4 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an above average Stage 2 Pokemon card from the Burning Shadows set.  That makes two above average Stage 2 Pokemon cards from the Burning Shadows set so far, Butterfree and this Vileplume.  Like I mentioned above, especially in today's metagame, this card can be very good, preventing Basic Pokemon from attacking can really do a lot of damage to your opponent, letting you attack each turn, while they either have to put in a Pokemon they may not want to use or not attack at all.  Even though the first two Pokemon in this line are poor, I am still giving this entire line a 4 out of 5 rating, I think Vileplume is that good of card, keep it stashed on your Bench, and use it to take down Basic Pokemon.

Vileplume -- Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Vileplume from the Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Set.  Vileplume is a stage 2, grass type Pokemon card, with an hp of 130.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a three colorless energy card retreat cost.  Vileplume's Ability is called Irritating Pollen and says that each player can't play any item cards from their hands.  Besides the Ability, Vileplume just has one move called Solar Beam that for three energy cards, two grass and one colorless, does 70 damage.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Vileplume is a stage 2 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Oddish into play and then evolve it into Gloom before you can evolve Gloom into Vileplume, both of those Pokemon are from this set and I've reviewed both of them the last two days.  If you've read my reviews of those cards you'll know that I thought both cards were below average, giving both cards 2 out of 5 ratings, I liked the moves on both of those cards however the HP on both were lower than average and thus making them not easily usable in a deck.  So knowing this about the first two evolution forms in this line and looking at Vileplume, this card follows suit with those two forms, since this card has a little lower HP, but a good move, and a decent Ability.  So the only way I would recommend playing this card is if you think your opponent will depend heavily on Item cards or you'll have an advantage it you can do something that needs an Item card from your opponent to fix, that way you can keep Vileplume on the bench and prevent your opponent from fixing their team.  Although Solar Beam does do above average damage, I wouldn't recommend using this entire line just for that move.  If you were to use this line for Vileplume's Ability, don't use more than a 1-1-1 line.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an average Stage 2 Pokemon card from the Ancient Origins set.  There really isn't anything to complain about on this card, other than its lower HP, which isn't too low.  This card has a good Ability and an above average damage move.  Together with the first two forms in this line, I am giving the entire Pokemon family a 2 out of 5 rating, all three cards are just a bit below average.

Vileplume -- Boundaries Crossed Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Vileplume from the Boundaries Crossed Pokemon Card Set.  Vileplume is a stage 2, grass type Pokemon card, with an hp of 140.  Vileplume is the stage 2 evolution of Gloom, and before that Oddish, both of those Pokemon I have reviewed the past couple of days, and both of those Pokemon are in this set.  Make sure to read tomorrow's review as well because tomorrow I'll be reviewing Bellossom which Gloom can also evolve into.  Vileplume has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to water type Pokemon, and a three colorless energy card retreat cost.  Vileplume's Ability is called Allergy Panic which says that each Pokemon's weakness in play is x4, this applies to both yours and your opponent's Pokemon.  Besides the Ability, Vileplume only has one move called Pollen Spray which requires four energy cards, three colorless and one grass, and does 50 damage.  Besides doing the damage, this move also poisons and puts the defending Pokemon to sleep.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Vileplume is a stage 2 Pokemon, I would recommend evolving Oddish into Gloom and then Gloom into Vileplume on your bench.  I would strongly urge you to do this in the case of this Pokemon line because both Oddish and Gloom are extremely weak.  Once you do get Vileplume into play, hopefully having at least 3 energy cards on it, I would attach an energy card to it if you have to and then use Pollen Spray every turn.  I would consider keeping this card on the bench for awhile during the game if you aren't facing fire type Pokemon (if you are I would keep this card in your hand) and you include many Pokemon in your deck that do not have weaknesses.  That way, if you have Vileplume on the bench, you can hopefully do x4 damage to your opponent's Pokemon that are weak to whatever type you're using, yet if your Pokemon don't have weaknesses, it won't matter what type they are because it won't have any effect from Vileplume's Ability.  I would also try to include a few Pokemon cards that inflict special conditions in this deck so that when you use Vileplume's only attack your opponent will be overwhelmed with special conditions.  I would not use more than 1 of these cards in a grass type deck, if I were to use this card, I would use a 2-2-1 line of these Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is a slightly below average stage 2 Pokemon card, but if you're willing to risk it, this card could potentially be better.  The reason I'm giving this card a below average rating is because it is extremely slow to attack, only has the one move, and once you use Pollen Spray one time, the special conditions part of the move will have no effect the next few turns, so overall the move will do only 50 damage for 4 energy cards which is a terrible move.  Allergy Panic is the reason I would see people using this card, but for me, fire type Pokemon seems like a popular type of Pokemon to play, so I would envision this Ability would backfire on Vileplume more often then not.  So again, I would only use 1 Vileplume card in a deck, but I may pair it with Bellossom, you'll have to read tomorrow's review to find out.
