Magmar -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Magmar from the XY Evolutions Pokemon Card Set.  Magmar is a basic, fire type Pokemon card with a HP of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to water type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost.  Magmar does not have an Ability, but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Fire Punch, for two fire energy cards this move does 30 damage.  Magmar's second move is called Flamethrower, and for three energy cards, two fire and one colorless, this move does 60 damage, however after using this move a fire energy card must be discarded from Magmar.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Magmar is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Magmortar, you'll more than likely want to use this card with its evolution form, but because Evolutions is a Base Set reprint set, it does not include a Magmortar card, the most recent to include Magmortar is Furious Fists.  So, on its own, only looking at this Magmar card, this card is similar to the Ponyta I reviewed from yesterday, that it is slow on the attack, but since this is a Basic Pokemon that didn't evolve at the time, this card has a well above average HP, giving you a little more leeway to set up this card when in the active Pokemon spot.  This card is too slow for my liking and I wouldn't use one in a deck, but if you do decide to use Magmar in your deck, attach a Burning Energy card to it and you can use Flamethrower every single turn.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  So in my opinion, on its own, without considering any Magmortar cards, this is an average to slightly below average Basic Pokemon card.  Compared to Basic Pokemon that evolve, at least from the 1st generation, this card has a solid HP, and two solid moves, but compared to today's Pokemon, this card has too low of an HP to really consider using on its own, especially with its slower moves.  This card is suitable for use with a Burning Energy card, setting up on the bench, and eventually giving way to Magmortar.

Magmar -- Furious Fists Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Magmar from the Furious Fists Pokemon Card Set.  Magmar is a basic, fire type Pokemon card with an hp of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to water type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost. Magmar does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Ram, this move requires one fire energy card and does 10 damage.  Magmar's second move is called Ember, and for two energy cards, one each of fire and colorless, the move does 30 damage, however you must discard a fire energy card attached to Magmar after using this move.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Magmar is a basic Pokemon card with a stage 1 evolution in Magmortar, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, you'll more than likely want to use this card with that Pokemon.  However, since I haven't reviewed that card yet, I'll just act as though I plan on using this card without its evolution.  So, on its own you could definitely use this card as a starter type Pokemon in a fire type deck because it has such a high HP and because it has two moves.  I personally, would not use more than 1 of these cards on their own if I were to use this card at all.  I say this because even though Magmar has a good HP and two moves, Ram is an average move, but limited, and Ember would be a great move but having to discard a fire energy card every turn while trying to set up your benched Pokemon is not the best thing to have to do, plus if you want to just use Ram, you'll have to attach an additional energy card to Magmar to retreat it.  So, if you use this card in a deck, I would use it as a starter type card, get it into the active Pokemon spot early, use Ram most turns, so you have time to set up your benched Pokemon, then attach an additional energy card on it to retreat it back to your bench and put one of your more powerful Pokemon into the active Pokemon spot.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  So in my opinion, this is a below average Basic Pokemon card from the Furious Fists set.  This card is probably the best 2 rated card I have reviewed in awhile but I just couldn't give the card a 3 rating because of the fact Ember makes you discard an energy card and that the retreat cost on Magmar is two energy cards.  So overall, if you're building a fire type deck, this card is definitely one to consider but I would probably look elsewhere for one to use.

Magmar -- Dragons Exalted Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Magmar from the Dragons Exalted Pokemon Card Set.   Mamgar is a basic, fire type Pokemon card, with an hp of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to water type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost.  Magmar does not have an Ability, but it does have two moves, the first move is called Beat and for one colorless energy card this move does 10 damage.  Magmar's second move is called Magma Punch, this move requires three energy cards, two fire and one colorless, and does 50 damage.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since this is a basic Pokemon card with an evolution in Magmortar, I would not put this card into the active Pokemon spot unless I evolved it into Magmortar first, I would keep Magmar on the bench and attach up to three energy cards to it, since Magmortar can do 90 damage in one turn if it has three energy cards on it.  If you have to move Magmar to the active Pokemon spot, I would try and use Magma Punch since it does more damage than Beat, but if you only are using Magmar in the deck or you aren't going to be able to evolve Magmar into Magmortar, I wouldn't waste the energy cards in the deck by attaching them to Magmar and then having Magmar get knocked out.  Tomorrow, after reviewing Magmar I'll have a better idea how many of each Pokemon in this line to use in a deck.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  This card is a below average basic Pokemon card, the thing that makes this card somewhat good is that it has a high hp for a basic Pokemon so you have a bit more time to get three energy cards on it to use Magma Punch.  Unfortunately, neither of Magmar's moves are very good, so I would not use this card unless I wanted to use Magmortar in the deck.
