Starmie -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Starmie XY Evolutions Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Starmie from the XY Evolutions Pokemon Card Set.  Starmie is a Stage 1, water type Pokemon card, with a HP of 90. It has a x2 weakness to grass type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Starmie has an Ability called Space Beacon that says once per turn, before your attack, you may discard a card from your hand and then move two Basic energy cards from your discard pile into your hand.  Besides the Ability, Starmie has one move called Star Freeze, this move does 30 damage for two energy cards, one each of water and colorless, plus if you get a heads when flipping a coin, the defending Pokemon is paralyzed.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Starmie is a Stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Staryu into play (I reviewed Staryu from this set yesterday) and then evolve Staryu into Starmie.  Starmie does have a BREAK evolution which I'll be reviewing tomorrow that you could use with this line.  If you read yesterday's review of Staryu, you'll know that I thought that card was average overall, it could be used on its own as a starter type Pokemon since it could do up to 20 damage for only one energy card, but it was limited in that it only had the one move and couldn't do much later in games.  So knowing this about Staryu and looking at this Starmie card, you could either use Staryu in the active Pokemon spot to start the game and then evolve it into Starmie the second turn, or you could use only a 1-1 line of this Pokemon family and use Starmie's Ability from the bench.  You could then fill your deck with high energy cost attackers or Pokemon that discard energy when attacking, since Space Beacon can quickly retrieve them from the discard pile.  One thing you'll want to note is that Space Beacon retrieves 2 energy cards per turn from the discard pile, but it does not provide any abilities for attaching more than 1 energy card per turn.  So overall, if you're building a water type deck or are looking for a unique Ability to get energy cards back in your hand, I would highly recommend taking a look at this line.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is an average Stage 1 Pokemon card overall from the XY Evolutions set.  This card has a solid HP, good Ability, and average move.  Combine that with the average Staryu from this set, and this line, so far, is average overall, and deserves consideration when deck building, both Pokemon in this line are quick on the attack and have solid HP.

Starmie -- BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Review

Starmie BREAKthrough Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Starmie from the BREAKthrough Pokemon Card Set.  Starmie is a stage 1, water type Pokemon card, with an hp of 90.  It has a x2 weakness to grass type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  This Starmie card does not have an Ancient Trait or an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Deep Sea Swirl, for one water energy card this move allows you to shuffle your hand into your deck and draw 7 cards.  Starmie's second move is called Balance Blind and for two energy cards, one each of water and colorless, does 30 damage, plus this move paralyzes the defending Pokemon if you and your opponent have the same number of benched Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Starmie is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Staryu into play (I reviewed Staryu from this set yesterday) and then evolve Staryu into Starmie.  If you read yesterday's review of Staryu, you'll know that I thought that card was a slightly below average Basic Pokemon card, it was pretty average overall but it did only have one move and that one move was based off of a coin flip, meaning it may end up doing no damage at all every single turn.  So knowing this about Staryu and looking at this Starmie card, the main reason you'll want to use this line in a deck is for Starmie's Deep Sea Swirl move giving your deck a pretty good draw mechanism.  You can replenish your hand and not only get different cards in your hand, but also add cards to it if you only had a few cards in your hand before shuffling.  Outside of Deep Sea Swirl, Balance Bind is a pretty average move that can definitely be used since it only requires two energy cards to use but again, you'll want to stick to Deep Sea Swirl.  Because Starmie isn't overpowering by any means, in a water type deck, you'll only want to use a 1-1 line of these two Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an average to slightly above average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the BREAKthrough set.  If you're looking for a good draw mechanism card for your deck, Starmie definitely fits that bill.  Together with Staryu from this set I would give the two cards a 3 out of 5 rating, this line is definitely worth consideration in decks.

Starmie -- Primal Clash Pokemon Card Review

Starmie Primal Clash Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Starmie from the Primal Clash Pokemon Card Set.  Starmie is a stage 1, psychic  type Pokemon card, with an hp of 90.  It has a x2 weakness to psychic type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a free retreat cost.  Starmie does not have an Ability and it only has one move.  The only move that this card has is called Synchro Star, this move requires one colorless energy card to use and does 10 damage plus 60 more damage if the defending Pokemon and Starmie both have the same amount of energy attached to them.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Starmie is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Staryu into play (I reviewed Staryu from this set a few weeks ago) and then evolve Staryu into Starmie.  If you read my review of Staryu, the first thing you'll want to know is that it is a water type Pokemon card but doesn't require any water energy cards to attack.  The second thing you need to know is that Staryu is a very poor card in this set, only having one move that is based on a coin flip.  Because of this, if you want to use Starmie in your deck, definitely set up the entire line on your bench.  So taking a look at this specific Starmie card, I would highly recommend using a 1-1 line in a deck, putting 1 energy card on Starmie and keeping it on the bench until your opponent uses a Pokemon in the active Pokemon spot that has one energy card on it, I would then switch Starmie into the active Pokemon spot, use Synchro Star, doing 70 damage, and then retreat it during the next turn, hopefully performing a one hit knock out when you attacked.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 4 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an above average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Primal Clash set.  This card really isn't much better than average overall, having an average HP and only one move.  But I really like the combination of the move that this card has and the fact it has a free retreat cost, these two things work perfectly together and should really help you during your battle.  Together with Staryu from this set, I would give the two Pokemon a 3 out of 5 rating, Staryu is very poor, but I would never use it in the active Pokemon spot anyway.

Starmie -- Pokemon X and Y Card Review

Starmie Pokemon X and Y Review
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Starmie from the Pokemon XY Card Set.  Starmie is a stage 1, water type Pokemon card, with an hp of 90.  It has a x2 weakness to grass type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Starmie does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Recover, this move requires one water energy card and allows you to discard an energy card attached to Starmie and heal all damage from it.  Starmie's second move is called Core Splash, this move requires three energy cards, two colorless and one water, and does 60 damage plus 30 more damage if Starmie has any psychic energy cards attached to it.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Starmie is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Staryu into play (I reviewed Staryu from this set yesterday) and then evolve Staryu into Starmie.  If you read yesterday's review, you'll know that I thought Staryu was a slightly below average basic Pokemon card because the card only had one move and that one move even though doing a good amount of damage damaged Staryu when attacking.  So knowing this, you're either going to want to use Recover right away after evolving Staryu if it has been in the active Pokemon spot or keep Starmie on the bench and put three energy cards on it so you can use Core Splash every turn.  Of course if you want to use this card in your deck it would be best to use it in a split type deck of water and psychic so you can do 90 damage a turn with Core Splash, otherwise I wouldn't use this card in a deck.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an average stage 1 Pokemon card from the X and Y set that becomes above average if you decide to use it in a psychic and water type deck.  In a regular deck, this card is average because it has an average hp, two decent moves, and a low retreat cost but putting this in a dual type deck makes Core Splash way above average.  Overall, the line of Staryu and Starmie from this set gets a 3 out of 5 rating from me, individually Staryu was a 2, Starmie was a 3.
