Poliwhirl -- Sun and Moon Pokemon Card Review

Poliwhirl Sun and Moon Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Poliwhirl from the Sun and Moon Pokemon Card set.  Poliwhirl is a Stage 1, Water type Pokemon card, with a HP of 90.  It has a x2 weakness to Grass type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two Colorless Energy card retreat cost.  Poliwhirl does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Double Slap, for two Colorless Energy cards this move does 30 damage times the number of heads you get when you flip two coins.  Poliwhirl's second move is called Wave Splash, for three Energy cards, one Water and two Colorless, this move does 30 damage.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Poliwhirl is a Stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Poliwag into play (I reviewed Poliwag from this set yesterday) and then evolve Poliwag into Poliwhirl.  Poliwag does have a Stage 2 evolution in Poliwrath, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, that you'll probably want to use with this Pokemon line but since I haven't reviewed that card yet, the strategy below will act like Poliwhirl is the final evolution in this line.  So if you read my review of Poliwag, you'll know that I thought it was an average Basic Pokemon card overall.  It could be used as a starter type Pokemon in a deck since it can attack for only one Energy card and it had a solid HP, but because its other move required three Energy cards and could only do 30 base damage, I recommended looking elsewhere for a Water starter type Pokemon for a deck.  So knowing this about Poliwag and looking at this Poliwhirl card, this card follows Poliwag quite closely, it is average at best, but really not one you'll want to use in a deck without Poliwrath or Politoed.  A Trick Coin Trainer card would make Double Slap better, but 60 damage for 2 or 3 Energy cards is pretty average, so I would look for a card that has higher than 90 HP to use in a deck.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Sun and Moon set.  This card has a solid HP, and two moves, both potentially able to do a fair amount of damage.  But, because neither Poliwag nor Poliwhirl is anything better than average, I would give the first two Pokemon in this line a 2 out of 5 rating.

Poliwhirl -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Poliwhirl Evolutions Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Poliwhirl from the XY Evolutions Pokemon Card set.  Poliwhirl is a Stage 1, water type Pokemon card, with a HP of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to grass type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Poliwhirl does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Amnesia, for two water energy cards this move does 30 damage, plus you get to choose one of the moves on your opponent's active Pokemon, their Pokemon can't use that move during their next turn.  Poliwhirl's second move is called Double Slap, for three energy cards, two water and one colorless, this move does 50 damage times the number of heads you get when you flip 2 coins.

So if you read my review of Poliwag, you'll know that I thought it was an average to slightly below average Basic Pokemon card.  The card was pretty solid overall, had a good HP, low retreat cost, and a good move, but it couldn't be used as a starter type Pokemon since it required two energy cards instead of one for its only attack.  So knowing this about Poliwag and looking at its Stage 1 evolution in Poliwhirl, this card is also somewhat slow on the attack, but once set up, both of the moves this card has are useful.  For more of a defensive purpose you could use Amnesia, especially if the defending Pokemon only has one move it is using, and if you have a Trick Coin trainer attached to Poliwhirl you could use Double Slap and have a better chance at doing 100 damage.  Overall, the best strategy with the first two Pokemon in this line is to just not use them in a deck at all without using Poliwrath, especially since Poliwhirl does have a lower HP than the average Stage 1 evolution does.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an average to slightly below average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the XY Evolutions set.  This card is clock full of options having two moves, one that can do major damage and the other that does standard damage plus removes an opponent's move, if you can find a way to make this card have a higher HP, it is worth consideration, but overall, both cards in this line so far have received 2 out of 5 ratings, and that is what these Pokemon get combined a 2 out of 5 rating.

Poliwhirl -- Furious Fists Pokemon Card Review

Poliwhirl Furious Fists Pokemon Card
Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Poliwhirl from the Furious Fists Pokemon Card set.  Poliwhirl is a stage 1, water type Pokemon card, with an hp of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to grass type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Poliwhirl does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Rain Splash, for one water energy card this move does 20 damage.  Poliwhirl's second move is called Finishing Blow, this move requires three colorless energy cards and does 50 damage, plus if your opponent's active Pokemon has an damage counters on it, this move does 100 total damage instead of 50.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Poliwhirl is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Poliwag into play (I reviewed Poliwag from this set yesterday) and then evolve Poliwag into Poliwhirl.  Poliwhirl does have a two stage 2 evolutions in Poliwrath and Politoed that you'll probably want to use with this Pokemon line but since I haven't reviewed those cards yet, the strategy below will act like Poliwhirl is the final evolution in this line.  So if you read yesterday's review of Poliwag, you'll know that I thought that card was a slightly below average Basic Pokemon card, the main reason it being below average is because you had to put three energy cards on it in order to use its second move, but I stated that if you used it with this Poliwhirl card is was more like an average card.  So looking at this Poliwhirl card, I would highly recommend using this card if you're building a spread damage type deck, that way you could keep Poliwag and Poliwhirl on the bench, use a Pokemon in the active Pokemon spot that does 10 damage to all of your opponent's Pokemon, get three energy cards on Poliwhirl, and then put Poliwhirl into the active Pokemon spot and use Finishing Blow every turn, and since all of the Pokemon your opponent has should have damage on them, Finishing Blow should be able to do 100 damage every turn.  Since Finishing Blow requires colorless energy cards, this card will work in any type deck.  If you aren't building a spread damage type deck, I would probably hold off on using this card until I see what Poliwrath and Politoed look like from this set.  But if you do use Poliwhirl in a non spread damage type deck, I would use Rain Splash when you can and Finishing Blow the rest of the turns.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is an average to slightly above average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Furious Fists set.  I like this card a lot if it is used in a spread damage type deck and even if it isn't, it is still a good card, the only thing really only this card back from dominating is that Poliwhirl has a low HP at only 80.  So together with Poliwag from this set, I would give the two cards a 3 out of 5 rating, they are an average line so far, but definitely a line that could be used in a deck.
