Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Alolan Muk from the Sun and Moon Pokemon Card Set. Alolan Muk is a Stage 1, Psychic type Pokemon card, with a HP of 120. It has a x2 weakness to Psychic type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a four Colorless Energy card retreat cost. Alolan Muk's Ability is called Power of Alchemy and says that all Basic Pokemon do not have any Abilities. Besides the Ability, Alolan Muk has just one move called Crunch that for 4 Energy cards, 2 each of Psychic and Colorless, does 90 damage, plus, if you get a heads when flipping a coin, you may discard an Energy from your opponent's Active Pokemon.
Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Alolan Muk is a Stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Alolan Grimer into play (I reviewed Alolan Grimer from this set yesterday) and then evolve Alolan Grimer into Alolan Muk. If you read yesterday's review of Alolan Grimer, you'll know that I thought it was a below average Basic Pokemon card overall. I did like how it had an above average HP and it could inflict a Special Condition without attaching any Energy cards to it, but the card had a high retreat cost and one weak move that had a high attack cost. So I recommended not using the card in a deck by itself. So knowing this about Alolan Grimer and looking at this Alolan Muk, the only reason to use this line in a deck is for its Ability. Because you only need to use this card for its Ability, you can use the line in any type deck, and you can keep the line on the Bench the entire time. It is also key to not use many Basic Pokemon in your deck, especially those with Abilities. Besides the Ability, this card is too slow on the attack and has too high of a retreat cost to use in the active Pokemon spot.
Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating. In my opinion, if this card didn't have the Ability that it has, the card would be below average overall, but like I mentioned in the strategy section of this post, the Ability on this card is pretty amazing, so if you're worried about Abilities on EX or GX cards used against you, this is a great to counteract that threat. Together with Alolan Grimer from this set, I would give the two cards a 3 out of 5 rating, mainly because the line will stay on the Bench, and you'll only want to use 1 of each.
