Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Magmortar from the Furious Fists Pokemon Card Set. Magmortar is a stage 1, fire type Pokemon card, with an hp of 120. It has a x2 weakness to water type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a three colorless energy card retreat cost. Magmortar does not have an Ability but it does have two moves. The first move that this card has is called Flame Charge, for one fire energy card this move does 30 damage, plus it allows you to search your deck for a fire energy card and attach it to Magmortar. Magmortar's second move is called Twin Bursts, this move requires four energy cards, three colorless and one fire, and does 80 damage, plus if Electivire is on your bench, this move does 80 more damage.
Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Magmortar is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Magmar into play (I reviewed Magmar from this set yesterday) and then evolve Magmar into Magmortar. If you read yesterday's review of Magmar, you'll know that I thought that card was an average Basic Pokemon card that I gave a little below average rating to because of its higher retreat cost and move that made you discard an energy card each turn. So knowing this about Magmar and looking at this Magmortar card, the only time I think I would use this family in a deck would be if I were building a dual type deck of lightning and fire type Pokemon, that way I could utilize the extra damage that Twin Bursts does and do 160 damage every single turn. So, I would only recommend using Magmortar in a deck with Electivire, I would set up Magmar and then Magmortar on the bench, get four energy cards on it, and then make sure Electivire is on the bench before moving Magmortar to the active Pokemon spot. After that, I would make sure and use Twin Bursts every single turn. I wouldn't use more than a 2-2 line of Magmar and Magmortar in a deck.
Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating. In my opinion this is an average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Furious Fists set. If this card were just to be used in a regular, all fire type deck, that is the rating I would give it, I would pump this card up to a 4 rating if I were to use it in a dual type deck like I discussed above. So overall, I would give the combination of Magmar and Magmortar from this set, a 3 out of 5 rating, both cards are good together and about average, so they are definitely worth a look.
