Tangela -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Tangela from the XY Evolutions Pokemon Card Set.  Tangela is a basic, grass type Pokemon card with a HP of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost.  Tangela does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Bind, for two energy cards, one each of grass and colorless, this move does 20 damage, plus it paralyzes the defending Pokemon if you get a heads when flipping a coin.  Tangela's second move is called Poison Powder and for three grass energy cards does 30 damage, plus it poisons the defending Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Tangela is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Tangrowth, you'll more than likely want to use this card with its evolution form, but because Evolutions is a Base Set reprint set, it does not include a Tangrowth card, the most recent to include Tangrowth is Steam Siege.  So, on its own, only looking at this Tangela card, I would recommend passing on including this card in a deck.  If you do include this card in a deck, you'll want to include it in a mainly grass type deck since it mainly requires grass type energy.  With that being said, the reason I wouldn't use this card in a deck is because it is just too slow on the attack and even if set up, is under-powered at best.  The only way I could see using this card in a deck would be if you're building a grass type deck that has several Pokemon that can inflict special conditions, and since both moves on this card can do that, it would fit right in with the deck.  But overall, again, I would recommend passing on this card, especially since it is so slow on the attack.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  So in my opinion, on its own, without considering any Tangrowth cards, this is a below average Basic Pokemon card.  Just like with most of the Evolutions cards that I've reviewed so far, this card just isn't very good, the update from Base Set wasn't enough, and this card has too low of an HP, is too slow on the attack, is too under-powered, and has too high of retreat cost, so look elsewhere for Basic, grass type Pokemon.

Beedrill -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Beedrill from the XY Evolutions Pokemon Card Set.  Beedrill is a Stage 2, grass type Pokemon card, with a HP of 120.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a free retreat cost.  Beedrill does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Poison Sting, for one grass energy card this move does 30 damage, plus it poisons the defending Pokemon.  Swarming Sting is Beedrill's second move and for two energy cards this move does 40 damage times the number of Beedrill you have in play to the defending Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Beedrill is a Stage 2 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Weedle into play and then evolve it into Kakuna before you can evolve Kakuna into Beedrill, both of those Pokemon are from this set and I've reviewed both of them the last two days.  If you've read my reviews of those cards you'll know that I thought both cards were below average overall and together.  Both Pokemon had well below average HP and both Pokemon could do damage and poison the defending Pokemon when attacking.  So knowing this about the first two Pokemon in this line and looking at this Beedrill card, this card fits in well with those Pokemon, it has a low HP and a move that does damage plus poisons the defending Pokemon.  If you plan on using this line in a deck, don't use more than a 1-1-1 line of this family, keeping it on the bench the entire time until you get Beedrill set up, you can then move Beedrill in and out of the active Pokemon spot, poisoning the defending Pokemon and doing damage.  I would not recommend using multiple Beedrill in a deck, which means that at most, this card can do 40 damage a turn.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is a below average Stage 2 Pokemon card from the Evolutions set.  Just like Weedle and Kakuna from this set, this card just has too low of a HP to be used in a deck, and even though it has a free retreat cost, this card is pretty weak when attacking, and can only do a good amount of damage when multiple Beedrill cards are in play at once.  So overall, since I've given each card in this line a 2 out of 5 rating, I would give the entire line only a 1 out of 5 rating, definitely look elsewhere when deck building.

Kakuna -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Kakuna from the XY Evolutions Pokemon Card set.  Kakuna is a Stage 1, grass type Pokemon card, with a HP of 80.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost.  Kakuna does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Stiffen, for two colorless energy cards this move reduces any damage done to Kakuna during your opponent's next turn by 40.  Kakuna's second move is called Poison Powder, for two grass energy cards this move does 20 damage, plus poisons the defending Pokemon if you get a heads when flipping a coin.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Kakuna is a Stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Weedle into play (I reviewed Weedle from this set yesterday) and then evolve Weedle into Kakuna.  Kakuna does have a Stage 2 evolution in Beedrill, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, that you'll probably want to use with this Pokemon line but since I haven't reviewed that card yet, the strategy below will act like Kakuna is the final evolution in this line.  So if you read my review of Weedle, you'll know that I thought it was a below average Basic Pokemon card, unfortunately it has been a trend in the cards that I've reviewed from this set so far to have low HP, and Weedle was no exception with only 40 HP.  Besides the low HP, it was an average overall card, being able to do 10 damage and potentially poison the defending Pokemon for one energy card.  So knowing this about Weedle and looking at this Kakuna card, this card is similar to Metapod, but just a little bit better, so if you're in desperate need for some Grass type Pokemon in your deck, I would recommend this line over that one.  With that being said, Kakuna does have a below average HP, but it is somewhat quick on the attack, with only requiring two energy cards for each attack.  I would recommend waiting to see how good Beedrill is to consider using this line at all, but worse case scenario, you could use a 1-1 line of this Pokemon family in a deck, attach a Trick Coin trainer to this line, do damage and poison the defending Pokemon with either Weedle or Kakuna.

Pokemon Card Rating:  
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is a below average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Evolutions set.  This Stage 1 card would be an average card if it had a better HP, so if you can get it more HP, this is a card to use in a deck, especially in one that is heavy on inflicting special conditions.  Because Weedle from this set is also below average, combined these two cards get a 2 out of 5 rating from me.

Weedle -- Evolutions Pokemon Card Review

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Weedle from the XY Evolutions set.  Weedle is a basic, grass type Pokemon card with a HP of 40.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  Weedle does not have an Ability and it only has one move.  The only move that this card has is called Poison Sting, for one grass energy card this move does 10 damage, plus if you get a heads when flipping a coin, the defending Pokemon is now poisoned.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Weedle is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Kakuna, and a Stage 2 evolution in Beedrill, which I'll be reviewing the next couple of days, you'll more than likely want to use some of those Pokemon with this card, however, since I have not reviewed any of those cards yet, I will just act like Weedle does not have any evolution forms and that it will be used on its own.  On its own, very similarly to the Caterpie I reviewed a couple of days ago, if you can somehow figure out how to make Weedle have a higher HP, whether that be through a Trainer or through a Pokemon's Ability, this card would work as a starter type Pokemon since it can attack for one energy card and do not only damage but inflict a special condition.  However, if the plan of attack is to use this card and not increase its HP, 40 HP is way too low to ever have on a Pokemon in the active Pokemon spot, so it should either not be used at all, or be put on the bench and evolved there.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is a below average Basic Pokemon card from the Evolutions Pokemon card set.  Like I mentioned in the strategy section of this post, because this card has such a low HP, it shouldn't be used in a deck, so if trying to use a Basic Pokemon card in a grass type deck, I would recommend looking elsewhere, starting off searching for a Pokemon with a higher HP than 40.
