Bastiodon -- Steam Siege Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Bastiodon from the Steam Siege Pokemon Card Set.  Bastiodon is a Stage 1, metal type Pokemon card, with a HP of 150. It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to psychic type Pokemon, and a four colorless energy card retreat cost.  Bastiodon does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Counter Head, for two colorless energy cards this move puts the same amount of damage counters on the defending Pokemon as the amount of damage counters put on Bastiodon from your opponent's attack.  Bastiodon's second move is called Fortress of Rage and for four energy cards, two each of metal and colorless, this move does 100 damage, plus 10 more damage for each of your benched Pokemon that have damage counters on them.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Bastiodon is a Stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Shieldon into play (I reviewed Shieldon from this set yesterday) and then evolve Shieldon into Bastiodon.  If you read yesterday's review of Shieldon, you'll know that I thought it was a slightly below average Pokemon card overall.  Since it was a restored Pokemon, it was harder to get into play to begin with, add in the fact it requires a minimum of two energy cards to attack, and there really isn't that much of a case to play Shieldon on its own.  So knowing this about Shieldon and looking at this Bastiodon card, since this card is also slower on the attack and has an extremely high retreat cost, you'll definitely not want to use more than a 1-1 line of this Pokemon family and set the line up on the bench.  Bastiodon could benefit either in a deck that has Pokemon with low or free retreat costs, or one that has a powerful move but also does damage to the benched Pokemon, either way, it helps Fortress of Rage do up to 150 damage a turn.  So, if you're willing to put 4 energy cards on Bastiodon and have damage on your benched Pokemon, this card is worth a look.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is a below average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Steam Siege set.  This card does have a solid HP and two decent moves, but this card is slow on the attack and has way too high of a retreat cost.  Combined with Shieldon from this set, I would give both cards a 2 out of 5 rating, the same rating each card received individually.

Shieldon -- Steam Siege Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Shieldon from the Steam Siege Pokemon Card Set.  Shieldon is a restored, metal type Pokemon card with a HP of 90.  It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to psychic type Pokemon, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost. Shieldon does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this car has is called Rock Head, for two colorless energy cards, this move does 20 damage, plus any damage done to Shieldon during your opponent's next turn is reduced by 20.  Shieldon's second move is called Hammer In and for three energy cards, one metal and two colorless, this move does 60 damage.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Shieldon is a restored Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Bastiodon, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, you'll more than likely want to use this card with that Pokemon.  However, since I haven't reviewed that card yet, I'll just act as though I plan on using this card without its evolution.  So, on its own, of course you'll have to use this card with the Armor Fossil Shieldon trainer from the Steam Siege set, since that is the only way to get Shieldon on the bench.  That card itself allows you to look at the bottom 7 cards of your deck and move a Shieldon you find there to your bench.  This card is very similar to the restored Pokemon cards from the Fates Collide set as well as the Anorith card I reviewed from this set in how to get them into play.  So unfortunately, since this card is a little harder to get into the active Pokemon spot and it requires two energy cards to first attack, this card isn't the best starter type Pokemon out there.  The one advantage to this card is that it requires mainly colorless type energy cards, so it works well in most decks, but with only 90 HP, I would rather use a Stage 1 card that could do 60 damage a turn instead of this card.  So overall, although this card isn't terrible, I probably wouldn't use one in a deck on its own.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  So in my opinion, on its own, without considering Bastiodon, this is a slightly below average restored Pokemon card.  Overall, other than being a little slower to get into play and slower on the attack, this card has two solid moves and requires mostly colorless energy, so there isn't any definite reason to not use this card in a deck, but I would recommend several other cards over this one.

M Steelix EX -- Steam Siege Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of M Steelix EX from the Steam Siege Pokemon Card Set.  M Steelix EX is a Mega Evolution, EX, metal and fighting dual type Pokemon card with a HP of 240. It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to psychic type Pokemon, and a four colorless energy card retreat cost.  M Steelix does not have an Ability and it only has one move.  The only move that this card has is called Canyon Axe, for 5 energy cards, 4 colorless and 1 metal, this move does 160 damage, plus 10 damage to each of your opponent's benched Pokemon.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
Before I start with the strategy, remember that this card is a Mega Evolution card and an EX card so if you use this card in your deck and it gets knocked out, your opponent gets to take two prize cards instead of one and when you evolve an EX card into its Mega Evolution, your turn ends, you cannot do anything else.  So knowing these things, you'll always want to use Mega Evolution cards with caution, with that being said, you'll always want to use the appropriate Spirit Link trainer card do evolve the EX card into its Mega EX form so you don't have to end your turn.  So knowing how Mega EX cards worth and knowing that Steelix EX wasn't that great, mainly because it was extremely slow on the attack and under-powered, there is no reason to use more than a 1-1 line of this Pokemon family if you want to include this card in a deck.  You'll want to set the line up on the bench, getting 5 energy cards on this card before attacking, Double Colorless energy cards will help.  You can definitely play this card in a spread attack type deck, since Canyon Axe spreads damage around.  If you aren't building a spread attack type deck, this card isn't worth it, since it requires so many energy cards to use.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 3 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is an average Mega EX Pokemon card on its own.  This card does do major damage, not only to the opposing Pokemon, but to your opponent's benched Pokemon as well, but because both Pokemon in this line are really slow on the attack, combined I can only give this line a 2 out of 5 rating.

Steelix EX -- Steam Siege Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Steelix EX from the Steam Siege Pokemon Card Set.  Steelix EX is a basic, EX, metal type Pokemon card with a HP of 180. It has a x2 weakness to fire type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to psychic type Pokemon, and a four colorless energy card retreat cost.  Steelix EX does not have an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Wild Edge, for four energy cards, three colorless and one metal, this move does 80 damage plus 50 more damage if you choose to do 20 damage to Steelix EX.  Steelix's second move is called Iron Tail and for five energy cards, four colorless and one metal, this move does 100 damage times the number of heads you get when you flip a coin until you get tails.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, because Steelix EX is a basic Pokemon card you won't need to use any other cards with this card.  But remember, because this card is an EX card, if this card is knocked out, two prize cards are taken instead of one.  Steelix EX does have a Mega EX in this set, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, so you'll want to make sure and read that review.  On its own, I cannot recommend using this card in a deck, it is just way too slow, not only does its quickest attack require four energy cards, but this card has a high retreat cost as well.  So unless you want to put one of these in your deck and load it up with energy cards, do not use this card in a deck.  When in the active Pokemon spot, I don't think there is ever a time I would recommend using Iron Tail, it is just too easy to do 0 damage every turn.  Potions will be key with this card if you want to do 130 damage a turn with Wild Edge.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is a below average EX Pokemon card from the Steam Siege set.  Like I mentioned in the strategy section of this post, this card is just too slow to use in a deck, plus neither of the moves that this card has is that good.  So unless you plan on using this card with Mega Steelix, do not use this card in a deck.
