Goomy -- Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Goomy from the Ancient Origins set.  Goomy is a basic, dragon type Pokemon card with an HP of 40.  It has a x2 weakness to fairy type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a two colorless energy card retreat cost.  Goomy's Ability is called Water Down and says that whenever you place a water energy card on this Goomy card, you may search your deck for another Goomy and put it onto your bench.  Besides the Ability, this card has one move called Stampede that for two energy cards, one each of fairy and colorless, does 10 damage.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Goomy is a basic Pokemon card with a Stage 1 evolution in Sliggoo, and a Stage 2 evolution in Goodra, which I'll be reviewing the next few days, you'll more than likely want to use some of those Pokemon with this card, however, since I have not reviewed any of those cards yet, I will just act like Goomy does not have any evolution forms and that it will be used on its own.  On its own, I would stay as far as possible away from this card.  Not only is this card prime for getting OHKOed later in games with only 40 HP, but you can't even use this card as a starter type Pokemon because it requires two energy cards to attack and does a low amount of damage.  So there is really no strategy to use with this card other than to not include it in your deck.  Speaking of how bad this card is, why would you try and utilize its Ability so you can get even more Goomy in play?

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 1 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is a miserable Basic Pokemon card from the Ancient Origin set.  This is probably one of the worst cards I have seen from this set so far.  There really isn't anything I like about this card, it has such a low HP and a slow move that does below average damage that there just isn't any merit to using this card in a deck.  Also, I don't like the fact that Goomy's Ability requires water type energy cards and most decks that have two types of Basic energy cards don't work that well.  So again, stay away from this card, and do not use it in your deck.

Giratina EX -- Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Giratina EX and Giratina EX Full Art from the Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Set.  Giratina EX is a basic, EX, dragon type Pokemon card with an hp of 170. It has a x2 weakness to fairy type Pokemon, no resistance type, and a three colorless energy card retreat cost.  This card's Ability is called Renegade Pulse and says that all effects of attacks done by Mega Evolution Pokemon to Giratina EX are prevented.  Besides the Ability, Giratina just has one move called Chaos Wheel, this move requires four energy cards to use, two colorless and one each of psychic and grass, and does 100 damage, plus it locks tool, special energy and stadium cards the next turn, meaning your opponent can't use any of them.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, because Giratina EX is a basic Pokemon card you won't need to use any other cards with this card.  But remember, because this card is an EX card, if this card is knocked out, two prize cards are taken instead of one.  So knowing this about Giratina EX, the number one reason you would want to use this card in a deck is for its Ability and preventing Mega Pokemon from attacking.  So, almost regardless of the type of deck you're building, if you want to counter Mega Pokemon, this Giratina card is a must, especially if you're facing a deck with a majority of Mega EX cards.  You could just keep this card on your bench to prevent your opponent from using their Mega EX cards at all, or set up this card on the bench and move it to the active Pokemon spot doing 100 damage a turn and preventing your opponent from using a lot of their cards each turn.  The only down side of Giratina is that its only move requires two distinct types of energy cards which doesn't make for the easiest use.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 4 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion, this is an above average EX Pokemon card from the Ancient Origins set and one that will see major usage in the metagame if Mega EX cards continue to be extremely popular.  Not only is this card a great counter to those cards, but if you can fit two types of energy cards into your deck, this card can do major damage every single turn.  So if you're building a deck, this card is definitely worth a look.

Whimsicott -- Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:
Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Whimsicott from the Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Set.  Whimsicott is a stage 1, fairy type Pokemon card, with an hp of 70.  It has a x2 weakness to metal type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to darkness type Pokemon, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost.  This Whimsicott card does not have an Ancient Trait or an Ability but it does have two moves.  The first move that this card has is called Windy Mischief, for one fairy type energy, this move allows you to move all damage counters from one of your benched Pokemon to your opponent's Active Pokemon.  Whimsicott's second move is called Rolling Tackle and does 30 damage for two colorless energy cards.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Whimsicott is a stage 1 Pokemon card, you'll first have to get Cottonee into play (I reviewed Cottonee from this set yesterday) and then evolve Cottonee into Whimsicott.  If you read yesterday's review of Cottonee, you'll know that I thought that card was a below average Basic Pokemon card, it would have been a solid card to use in a deck if it had 60 HP instead of 40, because the one move it did have only required one energy card to use and put the defending Pokemon to sleep.  So knowing this about Cottonee and looking at this Whimsicott card, the main reason you'll want to consider having this card in a deck is for its Windy Mischief move, what you would do, is use an EX or something with a very high HP for quite awhile in your active Pokemon spot, retreat that EX, then move Whimsicott into the active Pokemon spot, making sure it won't get knocked out in one move, and use Windy Mischief, potentially one hit KOing the defending Pokemon.  Other than that strategy, there is no reason to use Whimsicott in a deck, since it is a Stage 1 evolution and has such a low HP.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 4 out of 5 rating.  In my opinion this is a slightly above average Stage 1 Pokemon card from the Ancient Origins set and one that can do a sneaky high amount of damage in a deck using its Windy Mischief move, as long as you give yourself time to get some major damage on one of your Pokemon.  Together with Cottonee from this set, I would give both cards a 3 out of 5 rating, both have low HP, so definitely warrant no more than a 1-1 line of use.

Cottonee -- Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Review

Pokemon Card Overview:

Today's Pokemon Card Review is of Cottonee from the Ancient Origins Pokemon Card Set.  Cottonee is a basic, fairy type Pokemon card with an hp of 40.  It has a x2 weakness to metal type Pokemon, a -20 resistance to darkness type Pokemon, and a one colorless energy card retreat cost. Cottonee does not have an Ability or an Ancient Trait and it only has one move.  The only move that this card has is called Cotton Bed and for one fairy type energy card, it does 10 damage plus it puts the defending Pokemon to sleep.

Pokemon Card Strategy:
So as far as strategy goes, since Cottonee is a basic Pokemon card with a stage 1 evolution in Whimsicott, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, you'll more than likely want to use this card with that Pokemon.  However, since I haven't reviewed that card yet, I'll just act as though I plan on using this card without its evolution.  So, on its own, I would not recommend using this card in a deck, mainly because it has such a low HP, and if you get it into the active Pokemon spot any other time than to start the game, the card is going to get knocked out in one move.  The one thing that I like about this card is that it puts the defending Pokemon to sleep, so potentially, if you don't mind the low HP, you could use this card as a starter Pokemon and put it in the active Pokemon spot to start the game, put the defending Pokemon to sleep, and then work on setting up your bench.  But, like I said, if you want to use this card in a deck, don't use more than 1 because it has such a low HP.

Pokemon Card Rating:
I would give this card a 2 out of 5 rating.  So in my opinion, on its own, without considering Whimsicott, this is a below average Basic Pokemon card.  This card is similar to cards that I usually give a 1 out of 5 rating, but because the one move Cottonee has does inflict a special condition and do damage, I am bumping this card up a point.  But overall, this card definitely isn't a card that has to be in decks, you can definitely do better.
